Powering the Future Workshops in Schools

South Tyneside, UK

With the wind in our sails, we brought invention into classrooms across South Tyneside.

The Powering the Future: South Tyneside and Beyond! Challenge did not end with bringing our first batch of winning inventions to life.

Whilst we brought the winning ideas of the public challenge we presented to exhibition visitors to life, we are also presented a host of exciting workshops in primary schools.

During November, several schools in South Tyneside enjoyed a creative session in which they invented using wind or invented something that uses movement to create renewable energy.

Funded by the new, extraordinary Dogger Bank Wind Farm being constructed off the North East coast and in partnership with South Tyneside Council, the workshops explored renewable energy, how it works, and why it is a crucial part of the solution to climate change.

Our workshop facilitator Lottie Smith, an artist based in the North East, lead the sessions. She helped the children gain an understanding of energy, how it can be created and how we can harness more environmentally friendly forms of it, she also introduced Dogger Bank Wind Farm and the importance of invention.

The workshops combined learning and hands-on STEM/STEAM activities but also offered the children an insight into the possibilities and careers within renewable energy.
