David and Sahara

From March to June this year we welcomed OCAD University, Canada, student David onto the Little Inventors team for his student placement.

With mentorship and support from the Ellie at Little Inventors David took on the challenge of bringing one idea to life from our Sustainable Development Goals 14 Challenge: Life Below Water.

Students from Somerset Academy in Markham, Canada took on the challenge and submitted their fin-tastic invention ideas to help protect life in the ocean. David selected his favourite idea with the support of the Little Inventors team which was The Star-Sucker by Sahara!

After telling Sahara the great news that her idea had been selected as the winning idea David set to work bringing it to life using his skills from his course in Industrial Design. David made various models to test out the different elements of the Star-sucker before deciding on the best materials and techniques to bring it to life.

You can find out more about the process via the Maker Blog here.

Here's the final design!

For the grand finalé David took a visit to Somerset Academy school to surprise Sahara and unveil her invention in front of her whole school! And David even gifted the model to Sahara and Somerset Academy to keep on display.

This whole project wouldn't be possible without the incredible support of Mrs Jyothy Mathur - STEM teacher extraordinaire who took on the Little Inventors challenge and encouraged her students all along the way.

We're so grateful for teachers like Mrs Mathur, and students like David, who champion creativity and understand the importance of these essential skills in creating a better world.
