Lit & Phil Invention Challenge 2026: Myths & Legends - First Day of Workshops

Joining us were Year 4 pupils from New Delaval Primary School in Blyth, along with a group of home educated children and their families.

Taking inspiration from the incredible surroundings, stories and collections of the historic library, our young inventors explored myths and legends before turning their attention to modern life - and imagining some legendary new inventions of their own.

They developed their ideas on paper before getting hands-on with cardboard and recycled materials to create prototypes and start bringing their inventions to life.

There were some wonderfully imaginative ideas, lots of enthusiastic making and a fantastic buzz around the library throughout the day.

And this is only the beginning! We have more workshops taking place at the Lit & Phil throughout October, before some of the ideas are selected to be brought to life by professional makers and showcased at the library this winter.

A huge thank you to all of our young inventors for getting the challenge off to such a brilliant start!
