Romeo Community Schools
Fourth graders from all five elementary schools participated in Little Inventors, an annual competition that challenges students to solve real world problems from around the globe.
Students worked on their design ideas in STEM class, then submitted them to the Romeo High School drafting students, who selected finalists and a grand winner from each school. The mechanical engineering students then got to work to create prototypes for each of the winning entries. These prototypes were presented at an awards ceremony at the high school on 28th May. The ceremony was organised and run by the students, who also served as emcees.
The winners were Ruben Chapa Castillo from Washington for “Roller Energy,” Archer Seggie from Amanda Moore for “Temp Cup,” Michael Gentile from Indian Hills for “The TV on Wheels," Sophia Harrison from Hamilton-Parsons for “Bob the Pool Cleaner," and Lincoln Clark from Hevel for “The Hoopinator."
The Process
Everyone split up into teams to tackle all of the tasks needed to bring the Little Inventors project to life.
Map makers
The first group collaborated on making the map so the tour leaders know where they are going. This will ensure that the tour guides don't get lost or take any unnecessary turns or go a way that isn't needed.
Script writers
This team wrote and edited a script to be read as the fourth graders walk across the stage and chose an upbeat soundtrack to match!
Certificate design
These team members made certificates to handout to each student which included postitive feedback that the groups had for each student. Signatures from important people were also featured making the certificates feel more "official".
Background slideshow creators
This group was in charge of making the slides that are presented in the background during the ceremony.
Seating chart creators
This group of students created a seating chart for the ceremony to ensure that finding their seats is an easy and organized process.
Presenters practice
These students read out their scripts during a trial run.
Little Inventors prototypes
Mr. Kiehler’s class created prototypes for all 5 Little Inventors winners!
Little Inventors tours
Our Tour Leaders took each school of fourth graders for a tour of Romeo’s DEM Academy. Teachers had displays outside of their classes showing what the students can expect if they take their class in High School.
Little Inventors Ceremony
Everyone found their way to their assigned seats and the ceremony began! Each group of 15 finalists were called up to the stage to receive their certificates from the presenters.
The prototype winners received their awards from Mr. Kiehler’s students that made them. The fourth graders were so excited! One fourth grader even wanted to play with her prototype right then and there!
Each school was SO supportive of their classmates! Everyone was cheering each other on.
